The biggest news out of Jamaica is the lyrical "killing" of dancehall kingpin Ninja Man, by Merciless. This took place at Sting 2000 Red Hot last Tuesday, in full view of over 12,000 patrons at the Jam World Complex in Portmore. For years Ninja Man reigned supreme as the toughest and most hyped dancehall deejay at Sting. But this year, he was in for a surprise, as under dog Merciless, best known for hits such as "Mavis" and "Gizarda," stole the spotlight and gave Ninja Man and Bounty Killer, a lyrical seizure which left them licking their wounds. Beenie Man who got caught up in the excitement, also felt Merciless' wrath. Ironically, it was the three deejays stacked up against Merciless and after the smoke cleared, Merciless emerged the winner
The #1 song for 2000 on the New York Reggae Top 100 Singles chart is "If Love So Nice" by Junior Kelly, while in Connecticut, the most requested reggae song for the year is "They Gonna Talk:" by Beres Hammond. The top selling reggae album in New York for 2000 is "Art & Life" by Beenie Man. Among the top new artists on the New York Reggae charts for 2000 are Junior Kelly, Christopher, CeCile and Patchy. The new #1 song in Jamaica this week is "It Wasn't Me" by Shaggy featuring Ricardo "Rik Rok" Ducent. Shaggy's album "Hot Shot" is the #1 album in Jamaica.
