October 9, 2002-- A new sort of beef has arisen between Jay-Z & Beyonce and Toni Braxton & Irv Gotti; both pairs of artists have new singles that sample Tupac Shakur's 1996 gangsta classic "Me & My Girlfriend."
Recently released to radio and internet, Jay-Z's version of the song, "'03 Bonnie & Clyde," will appear on his forthcoming album The Blueprint 2 - The Gift and the Curse, while Braxton's Irv Gotti-helmed rendition of the song will appear on her new album, More Than A Woman.
Live on air, an angry Braxton said on New York radio station WBLS 107.5, "I'm not hating on Beyonce or anything, but I have kids to feed and this is taking money out of their college funds." Braxton claims she allowed friend Def Jam president Kevin Liles to hear her song prior and blames him for the leak.
On the songs, Braxton and Beyonce sing nearly identical choruses, but Jay-Z raps his verses whereas "Me & My Boyfriend" boasts singing. Both songs use the same acoustic guitar from the original song, which was featured on Tupac's posthumous album as Makaveli, Don Killuminati: The 7-Day Theory.
While a rep for Def Jam said the conflict "hasn't been an issue yet," insiders speculate that Jay-Z purposely snubbed the singer in an effort to upset Irv Gotti, who recently aligned with rival Nas.
Jay's Blueprint II hits stores on November 5, whereas Braxton's More will not enter stores until November 19.
Neither Jay-Z, Irv Gotti nor Beyonce were available for comment at press time.
In addition to the two above, others sampling Tupac in the near future are Nas, Monica, and Eminem with his newly signed 50 Cent. The Eminem sample is rumored to be a dis record toward Murder Inc.
