The Source Releasing 'The Best of the Source Awards' DVD
never-seen-before footage of The Source Awards. Such artists as Tupac Shakur, The Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg, DMX and Puff Daddy, Cash Money Millionaires, Busta Rhymes, and many others will be featured on the DVD.
The Source Entertainment and Melee Entertainment (in conjunction with DreamWorks Records) are set to release The Best of The Source Awards Vol. 1, Hip-Hop History (1994-1999) on October 28th.
The DVD will be 90 minutes in length and boasts having exclusive, never-seen-before footage of The Source Awards. Such artists as Tupac Shakur, The Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg, DMX and Puff Daddy, Cash Money Millionaires, Busta Rhymes, and many others will be featured on the DVD.
David Mays, co-founder and CEO of The Source, the world’s leading Hip-Hop publication explains, “Hip-Hop is the most influential music and culture today, yet our artists still struggle to gain recognition from the Grammys, the American Music Awards and other mainstream award shows where token trophies are handed out in a few categories, and only the most pop-leaning Hip-Hop acts are acknowledged.”
Notes Bryan Turner, president of MELEE Entertainment: “The Source is not only the Hip-Hop publication of record - it is a key part of Hip-Hop history itself. As a result, The Best Of The Source Awards is a remarkably authentic retrospective. It fully demonstrates the importance of Hip-Hop and its far-reaching influence on popular culture.”
Back in 1991, Dr Dre and Ed Lover gave out the very first Source Award on the set of Yo! MTV Raps. Around that time, hip-hop music had become the nation's most popular music genre. Three years later, the first live and un-televised Source Hip-Hop Music Awards show was held in 1994 at the Paramount Theatre in New York’s Madison Square Garden. It was hosted by comedian Bernie Mac and featured performances by Tupac Shakur, Wu Tang Clan and Luke.
Mays points out that Tupac performed at the inaugural Source Awards - but that show was not televised. “Unless you were in the building that night, you haven’t seen this performance,” he says of ‘Pac’s surprise turn on The Best Of The Source Awards.
The DVD treats viewers to Da Brat and Jermaine Dupri ripping it together onstage; Method Man bringin’ the pain right into the audience; Busta Rhymes & Flipmode Squad indulging in their typical high-energy escapade; The Cash Money Millionaires bringing down the house N’Awlins style; Snoop and Xzibit straight West-Coastin’ on lowrider tricycles!
